Yes, but I can only control what I have access to. So keep that in mind!</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">This is quite possibly the most important piece of research that I&rsquo;ve ever put together for streamers, and it might be my most controversial, but it&rsquo;s something that I&rsquo;m willing to say and stick to because I believe every streamer needs to see it.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">If you&rsquo;re interested in maximizing growth and financial potential, it&rsquo;s time to start running ads on your channel. It&rsquo;s time to stop leaving hundreds, even thousands, of dollars on the table. By running ads, take what is yours and get the revenue you, as a streamer, deserve.</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">&nbsp;</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Why is this controversial? Why have we tricked ourselves into thinking that by running ads we are hurting our channels, we are selling out to Amazon, and we are going against the very grain of content creation? The answer is very simple: nobody likes ads. I don&rsquo;t like watching ads, so why would I run them? And I&rsquo;ve lived this way on the platform for the last 10 years. But something has changed. Something clicked recently and made me realize that my mindset, my longevity on the platform, and just my overall revenue model all improved when I got over the mental hurdle that &ldquo;Ads = Bad&rdquo; for my stream. So follow me on this journey and hopefully I can convince you as to why Twitch pushing creators to run midroll ads is one of the best things they have ever done: it increases your odds of turning streaming into an actual career that you can do for a long time.</span></span><br /><br />&#8203;</div>  <div class="paragraph"><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">The Intro</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">I&rsquo;ve streamed on this platform for 10 years. Over the course of those 10 years I have run almost no ads. I&rsquo;ve long believed that ads suck, that ads do nothing but push my audience away.If I were to run ads, I would be systematically killing my channel and my ability to grow on the platform would cease to exist. Up until a month ago, I had convinced myself that I would never truly run ads because it would only hurt my stream.</span></span><br /><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">For 10 years on this platform, I was </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">wrong.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">I&rsquo;m writing this to convince you to not make the very same mistake that I made for 10 years. This is not coming from someone who likes ads. I don&rsquo;t think there is a single person out there who would love to have content broken up with ads.&nbsp;<br /></span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">So why am I changing? What shifted this mindset when the entire rest of Twitch is on fire because Amazon/Twitch wants us to run ads? Well, like many things that I&rsquo;ve done over the past 10 years, I slowed down, dove into the actual numbers of what was happening on other streams, my own stream, and friends&rsquo; streams and made the decision to do research and not just react. The things that I found were incredible.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">So before we dive deep into this topic, let&rsquo;s lay a few groundwork points about this article that are going to be extremely important for building your understanding of why you as a streamer need to start running ads to maximize your profit and growth.</span></span><br /><br /><br /><ol><li style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"><span><span>Pre-rolls are awful in many many ways for content creators on Twitch.</span></span></li><li style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"><span><span>By allowing pre-rolls to stay on, you are leaving money + potential new viewers on the table.</span></span></li><li style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"><span><span>Relying solely on subs as your revenue source needs to be a thing of the past, because it is extremely unhealthy for your mental and physical well being.</span></span></li><li style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"><span><span>By incorporating ads into your stream with the viewer in mind, you&rsquo;re setting yourself up for a happier streaming experience for both streamer and viewer</span></span>&#8203;</li></ol></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">So now that we&rsquo;ve established those goals let&rsquo;s dig in.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><br /><span><strong><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Pre-rolls</span></strong><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700"> are Awful</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Everything in this entire article is going to come back to pre-roll ads on Twitch.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">A pre-roll is </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">an ad that plays the moment you join a stream</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">. Typically it&rsquo;s 30 seconds, but sometimes it can be a lot worse. It&rsquo;s literally one of the biggest factors that is hurting your ability to bring in new viewers. But before we can tackle why this matters, we must first establish an extremely important point: Twitch is vastly improving its discovery on the website; the idea that you can&rsquo;t grow on the website simply is not true. I&rsquo;m not here to state that the discovery on the website is where it should be, but the gears are working and just like anything with an algorithm, you&rsquo;re going to need to put some work in. To prove this point, I&rsquo;ll use my stream as an example.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">From April through October, I spent the vast majority of my time streaming Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green. This is not a new release game, this is a game that came out in 2004. During this stretch of time I saw my viewership average balloon from 2800 when I first started, to 4600 in a matter of a few months. I even reached a point of hitting close to 11,000 viewers. From a discovery standpoint, a game made almost 20 years ago should not be able to create that amount of growth. So what happened? And where were these viewers coming from?&nbsp;</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">This is where </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">Twitch Recommendations</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> come into play.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">I&rsquo;m going to break down some of this data in chunks so you can see how incredibly the algorithm works when you play by its rules.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">I began doing runs of a challenge that I created called Kaizo IronMON on April 11. It was a continuation of a challenge I had attempted in 2021. But this round of attempts was </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">DIFFERENT</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">. Twitch is sometimes not so clear on how these stats work.</span></span></em><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">We will compare the three months where my content was focused with the month of. March, where my content was all over the place. In March I streamed 13 different games for various amounts of time. I was effectively a variety streamer that month. In April, I streamed </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">MOSTLY</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> IronMON, and in May and June, </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">ONLY</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> ironMON.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></span><br /><br />&#8203;</div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-medium " style="padding-top:5px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:10px;text-align:left"> <a> <img src="https://www.streambig.net/uploads/4/6/5/5/46554781/published/recommends.png?1665944202" alt="Picture" style="width:639;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">So what were my findings? By streaming almost the exact same thing for the entirety of April through June, Twitch began to slowly recommend my channel more and more. You&rsquo;ll notice the % of viewership from Browse really didn&rsquo;t change as the months went on, going From 1% in March to consistently being 2% in April - June. The viewers who found my stream through Home Recommends and Twitch Recommends grew from 4% and 3% respectively to peaks of 8% and 7%. That's extremely incredible growth!</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">By sticking to one form of content, Twitch began to recommend me </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">MORE.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">So what does all of this have to do with ads? </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">It all comes back to pre-rolls.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">We&rsquo;ve established above that Twitch was recommending my stream to a lot of people, and we&rsquo;ve also established I saw phenomenal growth during this period, all the while pre-rolls were enabled, so what&rsquo;s the issue? Well that&rsquo;s the problem: while my growth was amazing on the surface, let&rsquo;s take a closer look at how many of these views I actually had a chance to make an impression on.</span></span><br /><br /><u><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Recommends and Browse Combined Stats</span></span></u><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">April saw </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">47,000 views</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> + </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">2800 New Follows</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">.</span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">May saw </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">90,000 views</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> + </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">4100 New Follows</span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">June saw </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">72,000 Views +</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">3300 New</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">Follows</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">These numbers look great if you assume all of those views actually got to my content, but that&rsquo;s the problem &ndash;&nbsp; many viewers simply never even got that far. </span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3_SOxlPBsI&amp;t=640s"><span style="color:rgb(17, 85, 204)">THIS VIDEO</span></a><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> from a couple of years ago suggests that pre-rolls can cause up to </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">30%</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> of new viewers to leave your stream before they even get through the ad itself.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">To put that in perspective, just in these 3 months alone, I lost out on </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">62,000</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> new people seeing my content. That&rsquo;s 62,000</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700"> NEW </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">impressions I could have made.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">So now that we&rsquo;ve established that pre-rolls are awful for growth and are hurting you in that department, how do you turn them off? Surely Twitch knows the same stats about how damaging pre-rolls can be to making new impressions! And they do! The issue is, though, that streamers by and large don&rsquo;t run ads. If pre-rolls were turned off with no promise from the streamer to run ads, Twitch would take HUGE LOSSES. Thankfully, they did give streamers a way to turn them off, by running mid-rolls. Mid-rolls are just ads that play in the middle of the stream.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">By running a certain 3 mins of ads per hour, you can completely disable pre-roll ads, </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">and you should do everything you can to make this happen.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Most streamers can only turn pre-rolls off in 30 min chunks. This means that every 30 mins, if you can run 90 seconds of ads, pre-rolls will be turned off for 30 mins. So effectively, you&rsquo;d need to run two sets of 90 second mid-roll ads per hour to make sure pre-rolls are turned off for any new viewer.</span></span><br /><br />&#8203;</div>  <span class='imgPusher' style='float:left;height:0px'></span><span style='display: table;width:auto;position:relative;float:left;max-width:100%;;clear:left;margin-top:0px;*margin-top:0px'><a><img src="https://www.streambig.net/uploads/4/6/5/5/46554781/preroll-ads_orig.png" style="margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 10px; border-width:0; max-width:100%" alt="Picture" class="galleryImageBorder wsite-image" /></a><span style="display: table-caption; caption-side: bottom; font-size: 90%; margin-top: -10px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: center;" class="wsite-caption"></span></span> <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:center;display:block;"><strong>An Example of how disabling pre rolls works</strong></div> <hr style="width:100%;clear:both;visibility:hidden;"></hr>  <div class="paragraph"><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">Income You are Leaving on the Table</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Knowing how to disable pre-rolls and enable mid-rolls is all well and good, but let&rsquo;s get to the most important part: let&rsquo;s talk about how pre-rolls are </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">hurting you</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> financially.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">As I have stated previously, I had not really run mid-roll ads on my stream in the last 10 years. There were stretches where I tried it, but quickly stopped because it just felt like something that was anti-growth, not because I had data to help me make my decision. While I wasn&rsquo;t running mid-roll ads, I was still generating revenue from pre-roll ads and making some decent income. But I wasn&rsquo;t aware that I was still leaving HUGE amounts of income on the table.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">I will again use myself as an example. While I won&rsquo;t state specific $$$ amounts due to privacy, I&rsquo;ll compare Ad Revenue during three time periods. I&rsquo;ve only recently started running ads in October, so keep in mind this IS a small sample size, but it should be able to paint a good picture.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">I compared my first 10 days of October with my best stretch in May during IronMON, which was probably my best month streaming EVER, as well as a stretch in December 2021 with similar stats.</span></span><br /><br />&#8203;</div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-medium " style="padding-top:5px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:10px;text-align:left"> <a> <img src="https://www.streambig.net/uploads/4/6/5/5/46554781/336177038_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">You&rsquo;ll see three key things here:</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><ol><li style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"><span><span>I streamed the least amount of time in October out of these 3 months</span></span><br /><span></span></li><li style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"><span><span>I averaged almost </span><span style="font-weight:700">Double</span><span> the viewership of October in May</span></span><br /><span></span></li><li style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"><span><span>Relatively speaking, Dec 21/Oct were same viewership</span></span><br /><span></span></li></ol><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">So what was the result?&nbsp;</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Let&rsquo;s first take October compared to May in terms of ad revenue. All things point to May being insane for me, and I did pretty alright, all things considered, with only pre-rolls enabled. But even with all of these factors I made </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">21%</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> MORE income from ads in October by running mid-rolls, despite having TWICE the viewership in May.That&rsquo;s an astounding number!</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Now, what if we compared that to something that had roughly the same amount of viewership + hours streamed &ndash; how much of an increase is it then? Well, it was insane. By running 2 mins and 21 seconds of midrolls, I made </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">THREE TIMES</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> the amount of ad revenue in December 2021. Keep in mind, too, that December is one of the best months for ads on Twitch due to the holidays.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">These numbers are not even factoring in Twitch&rsquo;s recent </span><a href="https://help.twitch.tv/s/article/ads-incentive-program?language=en_US#:~:text=The%20ads%20incentive%20bonus%20is,with%20your%20regular%20ad%20share."><span style="color:rgb(17, 85, 204); font-weight:700">Ad Incentive Program</span></a><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">. </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Twitch recently rolled out a program that gave creators a 55% split on all revenue share from ads that Twitch brought in. You might be thinking to yourself that&rsquo;s really not that much, but 55% is a competitive number. To put things in perspective, YouTube recently launched monetization for Shorts at 45% to the creator. The Twitch Ad Incentive program basically gives you an offer you can opt into that is locked in for that month only. So if the next month is different, you simply do not have to take the incentive. The more consistency you have in running ads, the more&nbsp; the Incentive Program is&nbsp; going to offer you. So if you saw those offers, and they were small, start getting into the habit of running some ads. You&rsquo;ll see that number jump up very quickly.&nbsp; The important takeaway here is that&nbsp; Twitch is giving creators guaranteed numbers to run X amount of ads, and get paid X amount of dollars. This is a huge change and part of the reason why you&rsquo;re seeing so many creators start to push out more ads.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">On the other hand, we&rsquo;ve also been seeing streamers get set up with some unreasonable number of hours to stream. This is the issue when you try to automate everything like Twitch is doing. The good news, though, is that you do NOT have to stream those full hours. You&rsquo;re going to get a percentage based on these numbers for the hours you actually stream. So If you are offered 190 Hours, and you only stream 150, the ad revenue should be prorated based on that number.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">The bottom line is this is an extremely NEW system, and my theory is that as things improve and as Twitch sees the data we&rsquo;ll get better accurate numbers. The main thing to remember is, YOU DO NOT NEED TO TAKE THE OFFERS, in fact I&rsquo;d suggest not taking most unless the numbers are insanely in your favor. Twitch is working the system, you need to work it back.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">But here&rsquo;s the problem, many creators are entertainers, they aren&rsquo;t advertisers. And a lot of ads are being played at times that aren&rsquo;t optimal for the viewer. This is causing a ton of burn out from viewers who simply want to watch content and not be interrupted. And I&rsquo;ll address that problem soon, but it&rsquo;s a problem that has a very easy solution.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">The Sub Economy Isn&rsquo;t Enough</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">I love subs. I think if you ask most streamers on Twitch how they generate their budget for their livelihoods, most of them would say subs. Subs are the currency of Twitch and you can look no further than your following list to see how many people are running &ldquo;Uncapped Subathons.&rdquo; But here&rsquo;s the issue: your sub count fluctuates each month, especially if you don&rsquo;t stream due to traveling or taking a vacation. So many streamers are afraid of taking time off because that means they are losing subs.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">On top of that, it&rsquo;s also putting an extremely huge financial burden on your community to consistently generate revenue for you.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">According to </span><a href="https://www.pcgamer.com/twitch-streamer-income-leak/"><span style="color:rgb(17, 85, 204)">recent reports</span></a><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">, only .0015% of Twitch streamers make a Median Household living on the platform. This is a staggering number and shows you how the current model that many of us have been on is simply not sustainable. More subs isn&rsquo;t going to solve this problem, and although a better split for the creator would go a long way to help, it&rsquo;s still not going to close the gap as much as we think.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">I can&rsquo;t tell you how many of my friends consistently cite burnout and anxiety as huge staples of what it&rsquo;s like being a full-time streamer. A lot of this is because we put so much focus on subs. But there is only so much actual income to be split up among all the streamers on Twitch. There are only so many prime subs that exist, and viewers only have so much disposable income to give to streamers. As I stated, &ldquo;Uncapped Subathons&rdquo; are quickly becoming more and more common, but these are short-term solutions to an incredibly long-term problem. We&rsquo;re simply kicking the can down the road. Furthermore, these types of marathons exponentially increase the amount of burnout, as streamers are getting huge payouts in the month of the Subathon, but then seeing huge drop offs and no actual growth.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">And here&rsquo;s the bottom line. When you&rsquo;re feeling tired, anxious, exhausted, and burnt out, you&rsquo;re not going to be having fun streaming. And when you&rsquo;re not having fun streaming, your growth will be stunted. There are thousands of streams on Twitch and it&rsquo;s so easy for a viewer to leave and go elsewhere because there is no incentive for them to stay for a streamer in a bad mood. If you&rsquo;re not having fun, then they aren&rsquo;t having fun.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">There is nothing wrong with putting an emphasis on subs, but Subs are only part of the equation of a healthy revenue source. This is where ads come in. Ads allow you to place less focus on hitting certain numbers of subs, and instead allow you to focus on your content. Ads alleviate the pressure on viewers to spend dollars on your channel. Ads allow you to take MORE BREAKS during the stream and keep your mindset in check. When I started running my 3 min breaks per hour, I found myself way more refreshed from breaks, my audience had time to take breaks and I was doing shorter main game streams. A lot of times during October, after the main content stream, I&rsquo;d do a bonus stream of a game that I knew wouldn&rsquo;t generate my normal viewership, but the pressure wasn&rsquo;t there to perform because I was hitting great numbers doing 6-8 hours of streams.</span></span><br /><span></span><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">.</span></span><br /><span></span><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Now I know what you&rsquo;re thinking: &ldquo;But Pie, in order to earn money, you need to stream MORE to run ads.&rdquo; But here&rsquo;s the thing, if I&rsquo;m making </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">20%</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> more income from running ads than I was before, that means that&rsquo;s less emphasis I have to put on getting subs. That means that's less emphasis I need to put on being live to get that money. Running ads in theory adds no extra amount of time streaming, as I&rsquo;m simply running them while I put on my normal content. And if I&rsquo;m more satisfied with my income, I&rsquo;m going to feel less pressure to go live to try and earn more subs/bits/donations.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Don&rsquo;t believe me? Let&rsquo;s check in with some other streamers.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">&ldquo;For the last decade on Twitch the "meta" for how you paid the bills was relying on others for their generosity to make your sub number go as high as it could. With the Ad Incentive program, I feel a lot more freedom as an entertainer to not stress about the financial side of things, and not feel like if people don't sub, I can't provide for my loved ones.&rdquo;</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;- Streamer &ldquo;Spikevegeta&rdquo; on Ad Incentive Programs Positive Effects</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><a href="http://twitch.tv/spikevegeta"><span style="color:rgb(17, 85, 204)">Spikevegeta</span></a><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> is someone who consistently averages about 600-700 viewers a stream. He&rsquo;s been running ads on Twitch on the platform since they started doing the Ad Incentive program, and </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">he&rsquo;s the happiest he&rsquo;s ever been from a mental health standpoint</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">. He&rsquo;s able to focus on his content, he&rsquo;s able to not stress about hitting some random sub goal, and it&rsquo;s extremely obvious watching his content that he&rsquo;s happier.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">The bottom line is if you start to incorporate ad revenue into your list of options, your finances will improve, your mindset will be much better, and most importantly, you&rsquo;re going to be having MORE FUN streaming because you&rsquo;re less stressed about the numbers.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">But What About the Viewer Experience?</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">At the end of the day, a lot of the benefits we&rsquo;ve gone over today are great for the streamer. But all of these things feel like they come at the expense of the viewer. And on first glance I&rsquo;d agree with you. If you compare the viewer experience of &ldquo;No ads vs ads,&rdquo; it&rsquo;s pretty clear that almost all of us would rather watch our favorite content creators without being interrupted. And while I hope that someday there will be a better model for streamers that includes no ads, in the year 2022, that isn&rsquo;t the case.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">As I stated earlier, one of the byproducts of the Ad Incentive program was streamers running more ads but not really having a plan on </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">WHEN </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">to run them. We need to find out how we can get our max amount from ads while also making sure the viewer doesn&rsquo;t get burnt out.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">So what do people actually prefer? When it came down to how that mid-roll was distributed over the course of an hour, viewers preferred one large chunk of ads vs 2-3 sets of smaller runs of ads in a similar fashion.<br /><br /></span></span><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">A big part of why the viewer experience is so awful when it comes to ads is because viewers do not want to miss the action on Twitch. No one wants a hype moment that happens on a stream to be missed because they had to watch the same ad for the 100th time. I&rsquo;m a firm believer that if streamers are taking more ownership of </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">WHEN</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> the ads play, the viewers themselves will be happier and more willing to stay around. If every streamer ran ads only during stretch breaks, or slow portions of content, I think a lot of the anger around running mid-rolls would be solved.&nbsp; We as streamers can&rsquo;t currently get rid of ads completely, so we have to work a little bit harder to make the experience as smooth as possible.</span></span><br /><span></span><br />&#8203;<span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"></span></span><br /></div>  <div class="paragraph">&#8203;<span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">The Effect of Ads on Viewers Staying/Leaving</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Okay Pie, but what about the numbers? It's great that you have a belief that ads aren&rsquo;t going to harm my channel, but can you show me some data?&nbsp;</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">I wanted to know the answer to this question as well, because two months ago, I was quite convinced that ads were the enemy of my stream. But is this actually true? Do streamers who run mid-roll ads lose viewers over time?</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">To find the answer I started with some of the biggest content creators on Twitch and the findings basically all said the same thing: viewers are not leaving streams who run mid-rolls, and in most cases these channels are growing </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">despite</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> mid-roll ads.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">I focused on two streamers: </span><a href="https://www.twitch.tv/hasanabi"><span style="color:rgb(17, 85, 204)">Hasanabi</span></a><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> and </span><a href="https://www.twitch.tv/xqc"><span style="color:rgb(17, 85, 204)">XqC</span></a><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">.&nbsp; Both of these creators took Twitch Contracts that required them to run some amount of ads per hour while also streaming X amount of hours.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Let&rsquo;s first take this <a href="https://clips.twitch.tv/AgileTangentialAlmondAMPEnergyCherry?tt_content=url&amp;tt_medium=clips_api" target="_blank">clip</a> from Hasan where he states, very transparently, that he&rsquo;s on a contract, which requires him to run X amount of mid-roll ads.</span></span><br />&#8203;&#8203;<br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">This was </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">TWO</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> years ago in September 2020. You can also see his sub count in the top right corner. So what were his viewership numbers then, and what are they now?&nbsp;</span></span><br /><br /><span><em><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">(All Stats in this section are pulled from </span><a href="https://twitchtracker.com/"><span style="color:rgb(17, 85, 204); font-weight:700">Twitchtracker</span></a></em><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"><em>, an extremely helpful site that I would VERY MUCH recommend to all streamers looking to better understand their own numbers</em>)</span></span><br /><br /><br /></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.streambig.net/uploads/4/6/5/5/46554781/hasan-numbers_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">The main takeaway is pretty clear. Hasan has still grown his channel while running more ads, compared to not running ads at all before. The viewers did not leave him &ndash; in fact, he saw a huge increase in his metrics.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Now I am not saying that by running ads, you can magically grow your channel. Your content still needs to be good, you still need to network and get yourself out there. There&rsquo;s a lot of factors at play here. What I am saying is that running mid-roll ads definitely did not slow him down. Just keep in mind what I mentioned earlier with regards to viewer bounce rates on pre-rolls. As Hasan networked and grew over 2021 and 2022, there were higher numbers of new viewers coming in and engaging in his content from recommendations that weren&rsquo;t getting bounced by pre-roll ads.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">&nbsp;Here&rsquo;s another fun tidbit. You can see in the clip that in September of 2020, Hasan was close to 18K Subs. How did those ads impact his sub count?&nbsp;</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Well as of September 2022, he&rsquo;s up to somewhere in the ballpark of 50K subs on Twitch. (Twitchtracker gets it pretty close but isn&rsquo;t 100% accurate) </span></span><br /><span></span><br />&#8203;</div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-medium " style="padding-top:5px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:10px;text-align:left"> <a> <img src="https://www.streambig.net/uploads/4/6/5/5/46554781/hassan-2_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Let&rsquo;s now take a look at XqC, one of the biggest streamers on Twitch. He&rsquo;s believed to have signed a contract right around March of 2020. I was aware that XqC ran more ads per hour than Hasan, so I wanted to see what kind of effect it had on his viewership to see if more mid-roll ads would have a proportionately negative&nbsp; effect on his viewership and income. The results were more of the same.</span></span><br /><span></span><br />&#8203;</div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.streambig.net/uploads/4/6/5/5/46554781/xqc-numbers-2_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Each year on this platform, he has grown bigger and bigger, and he runs MORE ADS than&nbsp; Hasan. And here&rsquo;s a great look at his sub count, showing almost the same trend we saw with Hasan.</span></span><br /><span></span><br />&#8203;</div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.streambig.net/uploads/4/6/5/5/46554781/xqc-subs_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">These are BIG streamers on Twitch, but what about a stream that&rsquo;s much smaller? We need to establish that ads are helping streamers of all sizes.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">So let&rsquo;s take a look at </span><a href="https://www.twitch.tv/Majinphil"><span style="color:rgb(17, 85, 204)">Majinphil</span></a><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">, a close friend of mine who has been running ads on his channel since 2020 as well.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">In May of 2020, MajinPhil began to run 2 mins of ads per hour on his channel. His average viewership in May for his main game at the time, Majora&rsquo;s Mask, was just under 700 viewers. Fast forward to September of 2022, his games have changed, but his ad strategy has not. He now typically averages between 1300 to1400 viewers. Again, this growth isn&rsquo;t just because Phil was running ads, but he was not being hindered by them.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">And in my own experiment, I started doing more ironMON in October while committing to running ads.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">These are my numbers SINCE RUNNING ADS.</span></span><br /><span></span><br />&#8203;</div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-medium " style="padding-top:5px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:10px;text-align:left"> <a> <img src="https://www.streambig.net/uploads/4/6/5/5/46554781/ironmon-in-october_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">You&rsquo;ll see as I got back into doing ironMON streams, the viewership continued to climb up, just like it did when I wasn&rsquo;t running ads. And the algorithm was starting to kick back in again, after not playing ironMON and doing more random things on my stream for a big chunk of time. Ads were not inhibiting my ability to see growth happen at all.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">So What Now?</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">After all the research, after all the digging and looking at my own stats, the answer for </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">ME</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> is very clear. I&rsquo;m going to start running ads and do my best to incorporate them in a way that is the least disruptive for my audience. There will be growing pains, since most of Twitch has virtually operated on a no mid-roll existence. Simply expecting everyone to adopt these new changes isn&rsquo;t realistic.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">If you&rsquo;ve read this article and you&rsquo;re thinking, &ldquo;I need to make this change NOW!&rdquo; pump the brakes a bit. The next step is to talk to </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">YOUR</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> audience, because communication with your audience is so important. When I made this realization, the first thing I did was just talk about it with my community. I explained to them all of these points and made it clear, this was for the longevity of my stream. I </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">LOVE</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> streaming, and every day that I get to spend on this platform is a huge blessing. I want to continue to make this my career, not just a moment in my life, and my audience knew that. While there were a lot of questions, and a few people who were less than pleased, the majority of them understood that this would make the streams better because I would be less stressed and more focused on what I wanted to stream.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">When you talk to your community about it, when you actually sit down and have a real conversation with them, my guess is that your community will feel the same way. Use this article as a source, share with them the numbers, and be transparent. When you&rsquo;re transparent with your audience, you build trust and people will understand. They won&rsquo;t hate you or accuse you of being a sell out. They&rsquo;ll have your back. You have no idea how many people who are financially unable to support streamers through traditional subbing but would love to help in some shape or form. Ads give them that chance.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">And I&rsquo;m not going to lie: when I first started running ads, it was really weird taking a break every hour. It takes time to get used to it, but just like everything else, the more you practice the better you will get, and the more natural it will become on your stream.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">You as the streamer are going to have to do some work. Every community is different, and every streamer ultimately gets to make the decision on how they want to navigate running pre-roll or mid-roll ads. But I hope this deep dive makes it easier. Streamers all across Twitch are planning to stream this game in some capacity when it launches, and I&rsquo;m expecting the World of Warcraft directory to blow up for that first week of its release!&nbsp;</span><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">As someone who never played WoW growing up, there&rsquo;s been a huge desire to find out what all the hype was about. Growing up, a ton of my friends retold stories of getting sucked into the game and its incredible world. I was never really a big PC gamer, so I never had the chance to try it out myself.</span></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">As the launch of WoW Classic got closer and closer, I found myself wanting to give the game a chance and experience what so many of my friends experienced 15 years ago. Late August, into most of September had a pretty big opening with games I normally streamed, so there was an opportunity to check it out. So I bit the bullet, got a membership, and will now stream it at launch. While I started prepping for the launch, I got to thinking of a fun project that I could tie in with Streambig!&nbsp;</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">I want to chronicle my journey of streaming a massively huge game on Twitch at launch, and the prep and thought process that goes into making that jump. With a huge new release, you&rsquo;re going to be competing against a huge sea of streamers. Whether you&rsquo;re averaging 10 viewers, 100 viewers, or even 1,000 viewers, if you don&rsquo;t take the time to come up with a plan, you&rsquo;re likely to fail.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">For myself, when I realized that I wanted to stream WoW Classic, one of the first things I did was to follow and watch a ton of WoW streamers to get an idea of what worked.&nbsp; I lurked streams of varying size and personality to get an idea of the type of streams that did well with WoW. I also specifically looked at my time slot for when I would be streaming WoW to get an idea of who I&rsquo;d be up against. This is something that I think streamers really need to think about when choosing a time to stream. Growth on Twitch is all about filling a void, finding a niche. What unique experience can you provide that no one else is providing. Choosing a timeslot is a huge part of filling that void. You want to make sure that you have an opportunity in attracting new viewers to your stream.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><br /><span><font color="#000000">I noticed pretty early on that past 12 AM Central time, the number of BIG streams was pretty small, which meant that I had some opportunities to be higher up on the directory. So I specifically started gameplanning&nbsp;on starting the WoW portion of my stream right around there. A lot of streamers are going offline around that time, so with a fresh new game, viewers would be looking to find new experiences with new streamers! I started checking out some of the streamers that were live consistently around that time, and tried to get an idea of why people tuned into watch. I knew going in that if I wanted to have a chance at good growth, I needed to provide something different from the main group of streamers.</font></span><br /><br /><span><font color="#000000">As I watched more of these streams, it became very evident that a good portion of those streaming WoW Classic at launch were people that had been playing the game for years and were super excited to go back and experience that feeling of starting fresh again. It made me realize that there was a huge hole to be filled when it came to content with WoW Classic. All of the big streamers were veterans of the game. The way they would approach it would be methodical and fast, with a lot of them trying to essentially speedrun to level 60 and endgame content. This made me realize that I could leverage the fact that I&rsquo;ve never played the game to my advantage. A ton of viewers are going to watch WoW Classic on Twitch to experience that first time feeling of playing the game. If I could capture that feeling with my own playthrough, I could really differentiate myself from the rest of the big streamers and stick out. I wouldn&rsquo;t use a guide, or add-ons, and I&rsquo;d take my time and just enjoy the ride. By providing a casual experience compared to the hardcore experience&nbsp;many big streamers would be providing, I could at least get new viewers in the door. It would be up to me to bring them back.</font></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">So once I decided on a time slot to stream at, and the type of content/audience I was shooting for, it was important to get my own audience excited about the launch. Since I was relatively blind when it came to the game, I really had no allegiance to either the Alliance or the Horde. While I had no preference, I knew that my viewers who had grown up playing the game and definitely had a preference. So I set up a bid war a week or so before the launch, and let them decide with subs/cheer/donations. This helped two ways.</span><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">1. Helped set me up financially so even if WoW Classic was a failure from a growth standpoint, it would at least help offset the risk of trying a new game for an extended amount of time, and the potential loss of revenue.</span><br /><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">2. Allowed me to consistently promote the new stream game, and alert my audience to the fact that I was trying this new game out.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">I spent the last week constantly talking about how excited I was for the new game, and most of my viewers are aware that I&rsquo;m checking the game out. Whether they tune in or not, the fact that they are aware of what I&rsquo;m doing is huge. It&rsquo;s important when starting a new game on Twitch, that you have the backing of your community as a starting foundation. Get them excited for your content, and new viewers will want to be a part of it as well!</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">The final step in the process was prepping out the first few days of launch. I know that I&rsquo;ll be streaming one of my main games for the first 3-4 hours of my stream to bring in a good viewership, and then swap to WoW after a few hours to leverage placement on the directory.&nbsp; But I&rsquo;m still debating on what day I&rsquo;ll actually start. I know everyone will be trying to stream it at launch, so the directory will be packed. Should I wait one day to let all the big streamers have their huge night one, and then sneak in? Or should I jump in with everyone else and just see how it goes. In the breakdown of the first week of streaming, I&rsquo;ll let you know what I decided on, but I think there are pros and cons to both!&nbsp;</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">So here is the general gameplan and expectations that I have with streaming WoW Classic.</span></span><br /><br /><ul><li style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Stream - <a href="http://twitch.tv/iateyourpie" target="_blank">Twitch.tv/iateyourpie</a>&nbsp;</li><li style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"><span><span>Hours a week: At least 20 hours</span></span></li><li style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"><span><span>Starting Time: 12 AM Central, maybe earlier/later depending on the night</span></span></li><li style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"><span><span>Starting Follower Count at beginning of Challenge - 116,400</span></span></li><li style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"><span><span>Starting Sub Point Count - 2950</span></span></li><li style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"><span><span>Expectations: Slow growth in the first week, but possibly bigger growth in weeks 2, 3 and 4. I Expect sub count to initially drop by a couple of hundred, as it takes time for new viewers to watch enough of your content to sub. Now while there are advantages to the old sale, the new sale has far more potential to help grow your sub numbers and help grow your community. But it&rsquo;s going to take a little more time, work, and investment on the streamer&rsquo;s side to see that growth. In today&rsquo;s article I want to go over how streamers can effectively use sub gifting to increase their community, brand, and stream growth, and also go over a few things to avoid.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">To start off, let&rsquo;s first talk about why this new Subtember is huge for streamers who are willing to make some investments in their channel. First off, the deal is,at the end of the day,cheaper for the viewer that gets gifted. Let&rsquo;s say you&rsquo;ve never subbed to a channel before, and someone gifts you a sub during Subtember, and you renew for a $1. You&rsquo;re getting two months worth of subbing for a dollar compared to 7.50 during last year&rsquo;s deal if you subscribed for the same amount. (Remember, there was no gifting during Subtember last year, so if you wanted to sub for two months, there were no freebies.) As a streamer, two months is a HUGE amount of time to make an impression on a viewer. One of the biggest complaints I see from streamers is this idea that viewers who were gifted subs were never going to sub in the first place, so there&rsquo;s no chance they come back after the $1 subs are gone. While I would agree that a lot of them will never renew afterwards, it&rsquo;s a super narrow way of thinking, and I think it&rsquo;s also just plain wrong.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">You need to look at those two months of subbing as a free sample of what your community/brand/stream has to offer to a viewer. When someone subs to your channel, what are they getting in return? Do you have sub nights lined up? Are your emotes something you believe people would be proud to use all around Twitch? Do you have a Sub discord that people can hang out in with other subs? Are you actively engaging these subs in your discord, and not just posting when you go live? At the end of the day, a sub is $5 a month. That&rsquo;s less than a meal at SUBWAY (heh). If people who have some spending money aren&rsquo;t resubbing after those two months, it might be time to reevaluate what your community and stream have to offer.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">The two month trial brings me to a topic that I think a lot of streamers overlook. I want to talk about creating a budget for gifting subs in your channel, just like you&rsquo;d create a budget for spending money on games, equipment, and promotions. Gifting out subs is essentially an investment or a confident gamble on yourself. When you gift out a sub to someone, you&rsquo;re effectively saying, &ldquo;I&rsquo;m confident that what I have to offer is something a lot of people will want to continue to support.&rdquo; The reality is a lot of people aren&rsquo;t going to renew. Money is tight for some, others might only watch your stream for small amount of time. You can&rsquo;t get hung up on those that don&rsquo;t come back. </span><span>Keep in mind, all it takes is for one of those gifted subs to become a long standing member of your community in order to come out on top.</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Let&rsquo;s say you gift out 20 subs ($100), and only 5 of them renew. But those 5 all stick around for 4 additional months. You&rsquo;ve essentially broke even in the long run, not to mention those 5 could continue on and support your stream. You also have to realize that&rsquo;s 20 more people that could be using your emotes in other streams and spreading your brand. I&rsquo;ve had countless people tell me they never watch my stream much but will sub for my emotes. This all happens because you as the streamer are willing to put out an investment in your channel. It&rsquo;s just like anything you else you buy for your stream, sometimes it will fail. How many games have you purchased to stream and it never went anywhere? Growth on Twitch is sometimes uncomfortable, and you need to be willing to invest in yourself in order for long term growth.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Another relatively new feature that Twitch released recently was Community Sub Gifting. It&rsquo;s a system that uses some form of an algorithm to gift out &ldquo;random&rdquo; subs within your community. I love this feature, and I think it&rsquo;s a really easy way to do fun sub giveaways without having to manually put in a name every time. It also tends to reward viewers that maybe lurk more than chat. But one important thing to note with these subs is that the retention rate is very low when it comes to resubbing. How the subs are selected is still a big mystery, so if you&rsquo;re on a small sub gifting budget, I&rsquo;d try to focus on focusing on viewers who are active in your stream! Give back to community members that have for a long time supported the stream. I see community sub gifting as basically a donation from a viewer or yourself, and a good way to hit emote goals, but not necessarily something that will help build long term subscribers, at least not until they give us more customization options with how they are doled out.</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Speaking of sub retention, I ran a poll on Twitter and also within my community to get an idea just how successful the $1 renewal rate would be, and the results are very positive. Both cases had renewal rates of over 50%. From that point on it&rsquo;s up to you as the streamer to create something that makes the viewer want to come back for more. I&rsquo;ve even started gifting out subs to people who promise to renew for the 2nd month. It&rsquo;s a win-win for everyone. I break even on the costs, and the viewer gets a 2 month trial for $1. I&rsquo;d still recommend setting aside some amount of $ that you use for gifting. Experiment with how you gift out the subs. If you&rsquo;re a smaller streamer, I&rsquo;d warn against using the community gift option, and lean more toward one at a time. If you&rsquo;re a bigger streamer with a bigger budget, try using community gifting from time to time, but also reward those viewers that stick around often. One really effective way to gift out subs to poe ple who have been supporting a long time is through stream trivia! Ask a question about your stream that can only be answered by your most loyal viewers! <br /><br />&#8203;When you treat sub gifting as an investment, one where the payoff isn&rsquo;t instant, I believe it&rsquo;ll change your mind on its effectiveness. If you were to go back only two or three years ago, the amount of features that Twitch had pales in comparison to what it has to offer now. The ability to adapt to the new features and trends that come along with streaming is incredibly important. Some streamers that used to have huge followings have now been reduced to much smaller numbers. One thing that I&rsquo;ve noticed amongst some of my streamer friends, including myself, is how quickly people write off the new functions and features that Twitch launches. I think this is a huge mistake and I want to discuss how having the right mindset with regards to new features will help you grow your stream.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">New Features = New Opportunities. </span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Every time Twitch releases a new feature, no matter how big or small, Twitch creates a new opportunity for streamers to take advantage of. That time you spent complaining about how a new feature &ldquo;doesn&rsquo;t benefit the little guy&rdquo;? Some other streamer that probably has fewer viewers than you was thinking of new ways they could take advantage of the new feature for their stream.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">In the past few months, it seems as if Twitch has been releasing new feature after new feature. With every new awesome feature that people enjoy, there are always people that somehow find a way to look at the negatives of these things. DON&rsquo;T BE THAT PERSON. Whether it&rsquo;s on Twitter, on your stream, or other avenues of social media, being the person that always finds things to complain about is always the wrong choice. There is a difference from constructive criticism and whining. </span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">A common complaint I see by many streamers is that certain features only benefit the big name streamers and makes it less likely for smaller streamers to get found. I&rsquo;ve got news for you: most of these new features are going to help bigger streamers more. This doesn&rsquo;t mean that it can&rsquo;t help you though. You have to be able to see the big picture.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">A great example of this was the recent introduction of Vodcasts, the finished product of Twitch Playlists. Instead of appearing in their own section, they were now appearing in the normal Live Directory and Following feed. The idea of &ldquo;always on&rdquo; is quickly becoming a new reality on Twitch. As a smaller streamer, it can be really daunting to know &ldquo;X Big Name Streamer&rdquo; will now have even more opportunities to grow their stream. This makes the primary focus on others, rather than themselves. Your mindset shouldn&rsquo;t be focused on what others are doing with the feature. You can&rsquo;t control someone else&rsquo;s stream. Your mindset should be centered on growth: &ldquo;There is a way I can use this feature to have a positive effect on my stream, and I am going to find it!&rdquo; </span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">&#8203;Streaming as a small streamer isn&rsquo;t easy, but the majority of the &ldquo;Big Streamers&rdquo; started out there, too. By following these steps, there&rsquo;s a good chance you&rsquo;ll start to see some positive results.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">1. Do Your Research</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">I&rsquo;m assuming most streamers follow Twitch on Twitter, but if you somehow have not done yet, do that RIGHT NOW. Staying up to date on when new features are released is incredibly important, and Twitter is usually one of the first places that features are announced. Once announced, do some research on what exactly the feature entails. The more information you have on the exact product, the more readily you&rsquo;ll be able to take advantage of the product.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">2. Inform Your Audience</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">You won&rsquo;t believe how many streamers know about the new products Twitch is pushing, but never talk to their own streams about them. A big part of the reason smaller streamers never take full advantage of a feature is due to the fact they never tell their chat about the feature. When viewers see you&rsquo;re excited about a feature, they will want to find out why. The more informed your viewers are, the more inclined they are to check it out.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">3. Watch Other Streamers</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">If you really want to understand what works/doesn&rsquo;t work for a new feature, check out someone who is successful with it. Twitch is full of streamers that are willing to share their secrets and techniques, and all you have to do in order to learn is tune in. Maybe you&rsquo;ll find something that you can use on your stream, or even make improvements to the method. Don&rsquo;t just copy and paste what they do, though. Try to find your own twist. </span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">4. Try New Things/Take Some Risks</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Whether you stream on Twitch full-time, or it&rsquo;s just a side hobby for you, trying new things and taking risks are healthy for the growth of your stream. Not every feature that Twitch releases is going to be right for you and your stream, but a lot of times you&rsquo;ll never know until you try. &nbsp;I see so many streamers think that it&rsquo;s a waste of time to give something a shot, then complain when their stream remains so stagnant. What is the harm in giving a feature a shot? Even if it fails on your stream, you&rsquo;ll learn a ton about why it failed, which will lead to more success down the road. I can&rsquo;t tell you how many times an idea for a game to play, an event to run, or the use of a feature on Twitch led to later success, even though it initially failed for me. </span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">5. Stick with It</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">This step goes along with step four as well. I&rsquo;ve seen a common problem on Twitch where streamers are onto some great ideas that in the long run will greatly benefit their stream, but they give up on it too early. There is always a point where if something isn&rsquo;t working, you have to move on, but many times streamers never really give something enough time to grow. Depending on when you check, there are countless streamers that have HUGE follower counts, but when you peek at their concurrent viewers or their chat activity, it&rsquo;s a wasteland. There are so many streams that started out incredibly strong, but somewhere along the way, they lost the momentum that got them big in the first place. The music industry refers to bands that had a real big song, but failed to follow up the hype, as &ldquo;One Hit Wonders.&rdquo; Twitch is no different, and today I want to talk about why I believe so many streams burn out. I&rsquo;ll cover the difference between a Short Term vs Long Term plan, and why slow and steady tends to wins the race when it comes to a successful stream in the long run.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">Five Year Plan</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">One of the first questions you need to ask yourself when considering how you want to approach growth on your stream is &ldquo;Where do you see yourself in five years?&rdquo; This may seem like a silly question to some of you who just want to stream as a side hobby. But to those who are looking to take this as a serious career path, figuring out what your five year plan looks like is pretty essential to strong stream growth. &nbsp;If you&rsquo;re someone who plays competitive games at a high level, can you see yourself being at the top of your game five years from now? Will that game even have a following in five years? If you&rsquo;re a speedrunner, will you still want to be doing speedruns and only speedruns for the next five years? If you&rsquo;re a personality or character streamer, can you see yourself putting on a &ldquo;character&rdquo; every time you boot up your stream? These are important questions to ask yourself as you plan your next five years. The more you plan and prepare, the easier transitioning your broadcasts into different phases will be.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">SHORT TERM vs LONG TERM</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">So what exactly is the difference between a short term and long term plan? And is one always better? We&rsquo;ll look to break down the effectiveness of both over different scenarios to help you make a good decision for your stream! But first let&rsquo;s talk about them each briefly. <br /></span></span><strong><br /></strong><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"><strong><em>Short Term</em></strong> &ndash; Growth strategies on Twitch that tend to rely on one game or a specific gimmick. Can start off fast and strong, tend to slow down after time. (Examples: A League streamer that only streams one character/style, speedrunner who runs one popular game)<br /></span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"><strong><em>Long Term</em></strong> &ndash; Tend to be slower at first, but have more sustained growth in the long run. Many short term plans can turn into these if executed correctly. (Examples: Pro player who plays multiple kinds of games, variety streamer with a strong and loyal community, speederunner who runs multiple games)</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">So let&rsquo;s take a deeper dive into how these plans work regarding different parts of your stream!</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">Game Choice</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">I&rsquo;ve said many times, focusing on one to two games when you&rsquo;re first starting out on Twitch is a great starting point! You can get a committed viewer base that will come back again and again. The issue is what happens when you burn out? I think about a lot of very successful League of Legend pro streamers that have transitioned to more of a variety streaming role. Their numbers were gigantic when they played in the Pro Circuit, but when they officially retired those numbers took huge hits. The ones that stayed successful were building up a brand beyond them just playing League. They weren&rsquo;t just playing League all the time: they were slowly adding casual games to the mix, or even other popular competitive games. The ones that you don&rsquo;t hear about anymore continued to play only League, and soon lost relevancy due to no longer being a top player. By the time they realized that their audience was dying, it was too little, too late. Their viewership was gone, and their opportunity for growth was greatly diminished. </span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">I&rsquo;ve seen this trend as part of the speedrun community as well. The speedrunners that seem to have the most success are the ones that are constantly learning new games while still doing runs of the games they are most known for. If you&rsquo;re a speedrunner reading this, and you want to keep speedrunning but not grinding one type of game, expand your game list! Look for games that are similar to what you currently run. Maybe you love speedrunning, but it&rsquo;s not the only thing you see yourself doing on your stream. Start incorporating more casual games into your stream at good times! Let people see you be BAD at a game! Some streamers are so self-conscious of their publicly showing off their skill level when they try something new. Relying only on skill will only get you so far. Putting yourself in a position where your personality can shine is always good for long term growth! </span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">When I was popular for running Paper Mario back in 2013/2014, I knew that the time was coming when I wasn&rsquo;t going to enjoy doing runs on a daily basis. So I did my research and found games that were similar and enjoyable! I branched out to Super Mario RPG, another Mario RPG, and found that a lot of my core audience enjoyed watching runs of this. I also knew that speedrunning would eventually burn me out. I started incorporating more blind playthroughs and races to show people I was more than just the guy that played Paper Mario and Super Mario RPG. &nbsp;</span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">To put it simply, at some point you&rsquo;re going to burn out or the game you play is going to lose its relevance. And you won&rsquo;t be the only one who burns out. Chances are your viewers will eventually get bored of the same content as well! The longer you wait to incorporate new aspects into your stream, the more you miss out on long-term growth!</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">Community</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">A short term plan also has very little &ldquo;community&rdquo; incorporated in it. It&rsquo;s crazy to me that when I go into a stream that has a couple thousand viewers but can barely get a couple of hundred subs. These streamers tend to have little to no interaction outside of responding to donations or cheer. They might even get huge donations from certain viewers! They might be entertaining and able to constantly bring in new viewers into the stream, but they have a problem keeping them. Meanwhile you can go into a stream with only a couple hundred viewers but their sub numbers are in the thousands. &nbsp;It all comes down to the streamer. As the streamer, it&rsquo;s your job to create a community that people want to be a part of. Are you engaging and talking to your stream constantly while you play your game? Do you still interact with your viewers after the stream is done via social media and community hang-out apps like Discord and Twitch Desktop? I&rsquo;ve been in Discords where it feels like a group of friends hanging out having a good time, and I&rsquo;ve also been in Discords where it&rsquo;s barren and barely any conversation takes place. Streamers who not only bring in new viewers but bring them back because of the strong community they have built are streamers who are working on a long term plan. </span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">The moment I started having people subscribe to me on a monthly basis, I knew that I wanted to give them as much back as I could for continuing to support the stream. I created a sub Discord and made sure to prioritize it in terms of hanging out and spending time with my viewers. I would host sub nights where I&rsquo;d play games with subs both on and off stream. I gave people the opportunity to have a place to hang out once the stream was done and meet other people in the community. This led to something that extended far beyond than when I was live on Twitch. At any moment I can hop in my Discord and talk with my community and get to know them more. This sort of community engagement shows your viewers you care, and you&rsquo;re not just streaming for the cash and then bailing. While I&rsquo;m quick to let my viewers know that subbing does not equal friendship, I can confidently say that over time, some of those who started out subs have become actual friends whom I&rsquo;ve met and spent time with. </span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Recently Twitch introduced a new way of subscribing called &ldquo;Sub Gifting.&rdquo; It&rsquo;s been a feature that people have been asking for a long time. I&rsquo;ve seen a ton of my streamer friends gifting out countless subs and treating it like a free sample or a way to showcase what it&rsquo;s like being a sub to your channel. I love this idea! But I want to encourage streamers to not only gift subs, but use this as an opportunity to showcase what your community is all about. If people are gifted a sub and hop into your Discord and see that you barely stop by, and that barely anyone talks, there&rsquo;s a high chance that they&rsquo;ll thank you for the sub and then never sub again. On the flip side, if they join up and are immediately greeted by a ton of friendly viewers and a streamer that cares, the odds of them coming back are far greater! Have a plan on how you want to showcase just how awesome your community is!</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">Burn Out</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Burn out is a real thing on both the streamer and viewer side of streaming. When you&rsquo;re stuck playing one game, or you don&rsquo;t have much of a community to talk to, it&rsquo;s super easy to lose motivation in streaming! Streamers put all of their time into developing a huge stream, but eventually lost interest in what they were streaming. When the motivation is gone, the fun tends to stop as well. When you&rsquo;re not having fun, why even stream? </span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">You can see burn out and its results all over Twitch. There are countless streamers that use to average thousands of viewers but now are barely scraping by. They are incredibly inconsistent with their stream schedules, can go MIA for weeks, and when they ARE streaming, they look miserable. They bet their Twitch future all on one game, and now they don&rsquo;t enjoy it. Oftentimes, they don&rsquo;t have a plan on what to do next. Or maybe they play countless amounts of games, but the community they built is irritable and annoying. How many streams have thousands of viewers just spewing memes with no real substance? Dealing with that type of chat can be aggravating and stressful.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">If you&rsquo;re starting to see the warning signs of burn out, it&rsquo;s never too late to make changes to your stream! Some viewers might get upset, complain, and leave. But there will be those who understand and want to stick around. These viewers are the ones that will form the core of your community. The sooner you make the change to your stream, the less growing pains you&rsquo;ll have down the road.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">Conclusion</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Streaming is very difficult, and streaming success has a lot of luck involved. It can be really frustrating seeing growth be slower than the speed you want. Seeing others grow faster than you can be super demotivating. But slow and steady wins the race. I&rsquo;ve been streaming full-time for almost five years and I&rsquo;ve seen streamers come and go. Some big stars that everyone talked about have burnt out and barely stream anymore. I continued down the path of playing a lot of games and slowly building my community with each new game that I played. I knew that playing so many different games would mean some viewers would only be there for a few weeks and then never be seen again. I also knew that every new game that I played would bring new viewers in who would stick around and become a big part of my community.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">You must have this growth mindset no matter the size of your stream. Don&rsquo;t just be thinking about this week, or this month, or even this year. Be thinking about the big picture and about how you&rsquo;re creating something you&rsquo;re proud of four or five years down the road. Stay the course, plan for the long term. It&rsquo;s incredibly easy to use this extension, and the help that it will provide in growing your stream could even be deemed as <strong>BIG</strong>. If you&rsquo;re going to dive into extensions, this should be the first on your list.<br /><br />&#8203;</div>  <div class="paragraph"><a href="https://www.twitch.tv/ext/ih4ptg04wzw6nf4qms0612b8uj0tbh-0.1.0" target="_blank"><strong>Featured Follow Button</strong></a><br /><br /><strong>What is it?</strong><br /><br />&#8203;The <a href="https://www.twitch.tv/ext/ih4ptg04wzw6nf4qms0612b8uj0tbh-0.1.0" target="_blank">Featured Follow Button</a> is an extension that allows for you to display the follow button of a stream of your choice on your stream overlay. You can have your stream, your friend&rsquo;s stream, even someone who ended up raiding you that night that you want to shout out, pop up whenever you want. It&rsquo;s very noticeable, and anyone that is paying attention to the stream will be able to instantly see it. Once you get to the extension page, you&rsquo;ll see a button that says install, click that! Press the activate button, and you&rsquo;ll now be able to run the extension through your actual livestream dashboard on Twitch. So go to your dashboard and under the extensions widget, choose &ldquo;Featured Follow Button.&rdquo; From there you&rsquo;ll be able to put whatever stream you want in the Channel Name box, and even set up a queue of different channels. If you&rsquo;re noticing a lot of newer viewers in your channel and you have a small break where you have some time to talk, this is a great tool to point to your follow button! It&rsquo;s a very obvious reminder to new viewers to follow your channel, as it appears right on the main screen and is super easy to find. This may come as a surprise to you, but many viewers simply forget to follow when they go to a stream. Pointing them in the right direction with the right kind of nudge can greatly help! Let&rsquo;s say you&rsquo;re about to cut your stream and want to remind people one last time to follow your stream. By simply activating this extension, viewers will be more likely to follow as they are leaving and saying goodbye!<br /><br />Secondly, this is a great way of promoting other streamers that you know! Let&rsquo;s say you&rsquo;re dual casting with another streamer and you want to help point your viewers to their stream. Just drop their channel name in the extension, and now your viewers don&rsquo;t even have to leave your channel to go follow your friend&rsquo;s stream! Or let&rsquo;s say someone raids your channel and you want to give them the counter shout out to thank them for the raid! Pop their channel name into the extension, and now you&rsquo;ve created a great opportunity of introducing your viewers to the incoming raid stream.<br />&#8203;<br />Finally, this extension is going to be a huge addition to channels that host events on their stream where multiple streamers participate. A stream like <a href="https://www.twitch.tv/gamesdonequick">GamesDoneQuick</a> could easily showcase every runner&rsquo;s channel during their run, greatly increasing traffic to these channels. An E-sports channel can now shout out a streamers channel after the player makes a big play during a match, giving viewers who see the big play a chance to easily find the stream. This extension will greatly help promote those participating in events all across Twitch.&nbsp;</div>  <div class="paragraph"><br /><strong>&#8203;Extensions In General<br />&#8203;</strong><br />In my opinion, this is the best extension on Twitch just for how easy it is to help streamers gain legitimate followers. There are so many great extensions out there that will help improve your stream experience, so be sure to check out the full list&nbsp;<a href="https://www.twitch.tv/iateyourpie/dashboard/extensions">here</a>! The main suggestion that I would make when trying out extensions is always experiment and get feedback from your viewers. So many streamers have a very small understanding of networking and because of this, they approach it the wrong way. One of the quickest ways to destroy any chance of improving your relationship with other streamers is to force your channel on them. By following these easy steps today, you&rsquo;ll be well on your way to improving your ability to avoid these networking traps.<br /><br /><strong>DON&rsquo;T PROMOTE YOUR STREAM IN OTHER STREAMS<br /></strong><br />If there is one thing that really grinds almost every streamer&rsquo;s gears, it&rsquo;s the viewer that comes into the chat, and nonchalantly starts talking about THEIR STREAM. No matter big or small, no streamer wants to have to deal with someone who is only coming to a stream to promote themselves. Networking is hard, and sometimes it might feel right to take the easy route and try and force yourself in other streams, but DON&rsquo;T DO IT! I know from personal experience that when people do this in my stream, I immediately do not want to help them.<br /><br />This also goes for messaging the streamer through their inbox or Twitter and asking for a raid or a host directly. This does not work! It will never work, and doing so will only hurt your chances of ever forming a good relationship with the streamer.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br /><br /><strong>DON&rsquo;T SUBSCRIBE/DONATE/CHEER JUST TO GET RAIDS/HOSTS/SHOUTOUTS IN CHAT<br /></strong><br />Donations, subscriptions, cheers, or any other form of giving something to the streamer should be viewed as a thank you for the hours of entertainment streamers give, not a binding contract that requires hoops to jump through. So many people donate and subscribe with the expectation that they will be more noticed by the streamer, or that the streamer now owes that person something. There is nothing more off-putting than a viewer who feels entitled. &nbsp;<br /><br />I will say that when you subscribe to someone and spend more time in their channel, and show a love for their stream, streamers will likely want to interact with you more and want to help you out, but that isn&rsquo;t something that HAS to happen. These kind of relationships take time, and it isn&rsquo;t something that can just be bought in a single moment. There are countless viewers, ones that have never donated a single dime, that I would be willing to help in a heartbeat because of how much they support the stream in other ways.<br /><br /><strong>DON&rsquo;T JUST TALK ABOUT YOU </strong><br /><br />Let&rsquo;s say you are going to your favorite convention to meet your favorite streamer. &nbsp;We&rsquo;ll call that favorite streamer BESTSTREAMERNA69. You&rsquo;ve been so excited to meet BSNA69. You&rsquo;ve tweeted at him, you&rsquo;re looking to talk with the streamer, and you&rsquo;re really looking forward to getting a picture with him and chatting for a few minutes. When you finally get the chance to meet the BSNA69, you make a costly mistake. Instead of talking to the streamer about them, and telling them how you enjoy THEIR stream, you instead start talking about only YOUR stream. I&rsquo;ve had countless people do this, and it&rsquo;s annoying.<br /><br />When talking to a streamer, try to bring up a topic that you can both relate to. &ldquo;Hey, I really enjoyed your Dark Souls play through -- &nbsp;that moment when you beat X boss was super intense! You beat it so differently than I did, I really enjoyed it!&rdquo; These statements show that you&rsquo;ve spent time in their stream and that you care, and also open up the opportunity for them to ask more about you.<br /><br />So many people are thinking about only themselves when it comes to networking, that they forget the fundamental rule of networking: it isn&rsquo;t about you, it&rsquo;s about everyone. When you&rsquo;re looking to network people, I always encourage people on how they can help the other person, not how the other person can help them.&nbsp;<br /><br /><strong>THE LIST<br /></strong><br />I want to briefly talk about what I believe is an unspoken streamer subject, something that I truly believe every streamer has, but rarely mentions it out loud. When viewers do things that are obnoxious after being told to stop, or attempt to take advantage of the streamer, they tend to get put on the mental &ldquo;list.&rdquo; &nbsp;I&rsquo;ve talked to quite a few streamers about my &ldquo;List&rdquo;, and many of them chime in with &ldquo;YOU HAVE A LIST TOO?&rdquo; How people end up on The List is going to vary from streamer to streamer, but I find that doing any of the previously listed no-no&rsquo;s are a very quick way to get on that list.<br /><br />Once you&rsquo;re on The List, it&rsquo;s not impossible to get yourself removed, but you&rsquo;ve essentially made your first, and second, and possibly third impression of yourself to the streamer a bad one. I tend to straight up ignore any messages, comments or suggestions from those type of viewers because they simply do not understand the rules of how you go about interacting with the streamer. Don&rsquo;t be that person!<br />&#8203;<br />On the flip side, streamers don&rsquo;t just write off viewers due to one bad experience. From personal experience, quite a few of my favorite viewers started out to be incredibly annoying. People grow up and learn to better conduct themselves in streams. Always be willing to give people a chance.<br />&nbsp;<br />Networking can be a scary thing. Just like anything else, the hardest [...] ]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class="paragraph">Whether you&rsquo;re a partnered streamer, an affiliate, or just someone who streams as a hobby on the side, many of us have taken extended breaks from streaming. Momentum is a huge thing on Twitch, and any extended break can be a huge momentum killer for your stream. You may have stopped for so long that you think making a comeback and getting back to your normal routine/numbers will be close to impossible. But making a comeback is definitely not impossible. Just like anything else, the hardest step to getting back into something you use to do is taking that that first step.<br /><br />&#8203;Today&rsquo;s post is all about making that first step back easier. I&rsquo;ve broken down the keys to a comeback into six simple steps. There are obviously a lot more things you can do to help you get back into the swing of things, but these are six that I believe are incredibly important!</div>  <div class="paragraph"><strong>1.&nbsp; Consistency is KEY</strong><br /><br />&#8203;If you are serious about rebuilding your stream, you&rsquo;re going to need to have a solid schedule of consistency. It&rsquo;s crazy to think about, but many viewers actually plan their schedules around certain streams. If they hear one of their favorite streamers is coming back, there&rsquo;s going to be a lot of excitement, but that excitement will quickly dissipate if the streamer isn&rsquo;t consistent. If you say you&rsquo;re going to stream that Tuesday, unless an emergency happens, you better follow through. When your viewers see you&rsquo;re serious about streaming consistently, they will be serious about showing up to the stream consistently.<br /><br /><strong>2. Have a Main Game to Focus on</strong><br /><br />For a lot of streamers, there was a specific game that shot them up to popularity on Twitch. It could be a speedrunning game, a multiplayer game you played competitively, a challenge run you did, or even a casual game that took your channel to the next level. Going back to what got you started is a really easy way to reboot the stream. A lot of your old viewers will have a lot of fond memories of those streams, and if you can recapture the magic of those streams, it&rsquo;s a great way to rejuvenate your stream.<br />&#8203;<br />But let&rsquo;s say playing those old games was one of the main reasons you stopped in the first place? Let&rsquo;s face it, burning out on streaming is a real thing, and a lot of times the game that you stream can be the main instigator. If that&rsquo;s the case, you&rsquo;re going to want to do some research on what your new focus is going to be. I always suggest trying to find something similar to what you use to stream, but different enough to avoid burn out. So maybe your stream was mainly focused on speed running Super Mario Sunshine, but you got burnt out. Giving another 3D Mario speedrun a try would be a great alternative to keep something fresh, without losing what made your stream special.&nbsp;</div>  <div class="paragraph"><strong>3. Talk to your Friends/Mods/Viewers</strong><br /><br />This is a step that I think all streamers should be doing, but it&rsquo;s especially important for those who are looking to get back on the grind. A great way of finding out what worked and/or what didn&rsquo;t work for your stream is to reach out to those who use to watch you all the time for feedback. I&rsquo;m not just talking about random people that occasionally checked into the stream. I&rsquo;m talking about the trusted people within your stream circle that won&rsquo;t be afraid to give you constructive criticism. Not only will taking to them give you further insight for improving your stream, but it will also give you a chance to let them know that you&rsquo;re serious about streaming again, as well as a great way to get people excited for your return.<br />&nbsp;<br /><strong>4. Make things look and sound nice!</strong><br /><br />&#8203;I&rsquo;ve always been a big believer in the idea that the content of your stream is way more important than how your stream looks when you first get into streaming. But if you&rsquo;re making a comeback, you&rsquo;re essentially getting a 2nd chance at a good first impression. You&rsquo;re definitely going to want to have good content lined up, but making sure your stream looks and sounds good is going to be super important. If your stream looks or sounds worse when you return, it&rsquo;s going to leave a bad impression on a lot of people. Ensuring high quality in the appearance of your stream also shows those viewers who are on the fence about your consistency that you are serious about your return to streaming.&nbsp;<br /></div>  <div class="paragraph"><strong>5. PROMOTE PROMOTE PROMOTE<br /></strong><br />If you&rsquo;re making a big comeback to Twitch, you want as many people to know that it&rsquo;s happening. That means taking advantage of social media as much as possible and plenty of talking about the return. Setting a date that you&rsquo;re making your return and organizing a big event are great ways to get people excited for the return. If you have the right kind of relationship with certain streamers where it won&rsquo;t come across as shameless self-promotion, talk to a few streamer friends to let them know that you&rsquo;re serious and that you hope they stop by and check out the return. The more of your old viewers that are aware of your return, the more success you&rsquo;ll have! <a href="https://www.streambig.net/stream-big/networking-pt1">Networking</a> is important!<br /><br />Promoting isn&rsquo;t just for the first stream back though; it&rsquo;s also for your vision and future that you have with your stream. If you&rsquo;re making a comeback, and you have a solid plan, be sure to share with your stream viewers about all the cool ideas and plans that you have. Seeing the excitement that you have for your stream and its future will get your viewers excited as well.<br /><br /><strong>6. Have Fun <br /></strong><br />I know this sounds obvious, but for many streamers who stopped streaming, not having fun was one of the main reasons they stopped. Even if your &ldquo;growth&rdquo; will take a hit, focusing on fun before growth will be incredibly important for the long term. It&rsquo;s been a hot minute since the last StreamBig blog post (2016). Sorry about that! 2017 was a crazy year for me in terms of streaming, and I got tied up with a bunch of other projects that kept me from updating this site regularly! I actually wrote a few posts in 2017, but didn&rsquo;t want to post them without having a plan in mind for consistent content! I felt like starting fresh with something more consistent in 2018 was the better plan and so here we are! I&rsquo;ve got a lot of thoughts/plans for StreamBig in 2018 and I want to outline them in this post.<br /><br /><strong><u>Blog Posts</u></strong><br /><br />First off, blog posts should come back in a more consistent fashion in 2018. Starting this Sunday (Jan 21st) &nbsp;around 2 PM EST, I&rsquo;m going to try publish a blog post on a weekly basis with varying types of content called StreamBig Sundays. Content to teach, content to inform (Twitch Feature Updates), and content to promote (Events, streams, and products) are going to be my focus! Over the past couple of years, the response to StreamBig has been overwhelming! People tell me all the time how helpful the blog posts are, and how the changes they made to their stream from StreamBig advice has helped their streams grow! I&rsquo;m excited to get back to consistent content and I&rsquo;m looking forward to helping even more people in 2018!<br /><br /><strong><u>StreamBig Team</u></strong><br /><br />In October, we announced the creation of the StreamBig <strong><a href="https://www.streambig.net/team.html" target="_blank">Twitch Team</a></strong>. This was something that was brewing for a long time, and I&rsquo;m super happy we were finally able to go public with it! We kicked it off with the streaming event Waifu Wars! Right now our focus as a team is just jelling and supporting each other, but we&rsquo;ll have some more stream events coming in 2018! We&rsquo;re a group of 8 dudes that not only want to grow together, but are great friends! I highly encourage you to check out everyone on the team, as I promise you won&rsquo;t be disappointed with the content!<br /><br /><strong><u>Social Media + Stream<br />&#8203;</u></strong><br />With the content on the site slowing down, I didn&rsquo;t really touch the <strong><a href="https://twitter.com/StreamBigNet" target="_blank">StreamBig Twitter</a></strong> account. In 2018 I want to be way more engaging with people on Twitter! The increase to 280 characters gives a little more wiggle room in terms of posting stream thoughts. It also opens the door for answering questions streamers have! So expect a lot more activity on Twitter this year from us!<br /><br />I&rsquo;d also like to get back to doing bi-weekly StreamBig streams where I take time writing out blog posts and answering questions about streaming! I&rsquo;m incredibly passionate about streaming, and I love being able to share that passion with others! Expect more of those nights in the future, and maybe even a few special guests!<br /><br />Overall, I&rsquo;m super excited for the future of StreamBig in 2018. I love helping people, and I&rsquo;m super excited to get to do that more in 2018! Single player games actually offer a lot of value as a dual stream game as well. Single player games offer the chance at fun first play through races and challenge runs with friends.&nbsp; Viewers love seeing how streamers tackle and explore games differently, which is a perfect set up for a race. Races also create a slight competitive atmosphere without getting too serious.&nbsp; Friendly banter between two streamers, especially with regards to a friendly competition, is a great way to fill the void that is too much quiet time on stream.<br /><br />When you&rsquo;re choosing someone to dual cast with, I&rsquo;d recommend casting with someone you&rsquo;re comfortable with. Building chemistry on a livestream definitely takes some time, so being able to jump in with someone you already know really well is always a great start.&nbsp; Don&rsquo;t get frustrated when the stream doesn&rsquo;t click right away. When I started doing streams with good friends, even though we had known each other for a while, it wasn&rsquo;t an instant success. On-stream chemistry is going to be very different than off-stream chemistry and usually will not happen overnight.<br /><br /><strong>Good For Small Streams</strong><br /><br />The goal of a duo cast is to help both broadcasters grow by <strong>showcasing both communities.&nbsp; </strong>Keeping a chat entertained with conversation and commentary is one of the biggest challenges smaller streams face. There is nothing more awkward for a new viewer than to come into a streamer that has a webcam + mic set up, but isn&rsquo;t talking. Let&rsquo;s face it, staying motivated to always be providing commentary for long streams can be very exhausting.&nbsp; When you add a friend into the mix, that issue of dead air fixes itself.&nbsp; Having someone you can banter with while playing games allows you to have constant conversation and commentary. It also takes away a lot of the stress of feeling like you need to entertain viewers.<br />Pairing up with another small streamer is also a great networking opportunity. When you&rsquo;re barely getting a few viewers, having that extra person that works with you to help grow your stream can be a huge difference maker.<br /><br /><strong>Good For Big Streams</strong><br /><br />Big streams can greatly benefit from duo casts as well! Big streams tend to have really strong communities of viewers. &nbsp;Partnering with another caster that shares similar interests opens up the opportunity to bridge the gap between the two communities.&nbsp;<br />I recently did a stream event called the Month of Mushrooms and Masterswords with a fellow speedrunner named Spikevegeta. During the month we raced through different Zelda and Mario games to see who could win the most races. Playing through these games by myself definitely would have been fun for my stream, but adding in a second consistent person to the stream made the streams far more entertaining for viewers and allowed our communities to mesh together! &nbsp;Throughout the month, we both saw huge growth in followers, subs, donations and concurrent viewers. Months later, both of our streams are still benefiting from the experience, and viewers are already looking forward to next year&rsquo;s MOMAM.<br /><br /><strong>Balance is Key</strong><br /><br />&#8203;One of the easiest mistakes streamers can make with a duo cast is focusing so much on the interaction with their duo cast partner that they forget about their actual chat. One of my biggest recommendations when starting out these types of streams is get into the habit of checking chat and getting them involved in the conversation. It&rsquo;s a tricky line to walk, as the other streamer is trying to do the same thing, but the sooner you get a comfort level down with the other caster, the more enjoyable these streams will become. If you neglect the chat for most of the stream, conversations will die out, and the goal of creating an environment of a healthy chat will not be met. Be very mindful of this!<br /><br />I also want to briefly discuss the rule of three.&nbsp; There will be times when you might have more than one other person on stream with you. While there are always exceptions to the rule, generally speaking, more than 3 people in a voice call is a little too crowded. The more people you have in the voice call, the more distractions you&rsquo;ll have, especially if there are people that are in the call who aren&rsquo;t even playing the game you are playing. Remember: your stream should primarily be about your personality and brand. All it takes for one friend who can be a bit agitating or have really bad microphone settings to push new viewers away!<br /><br />&#8203;Overall, the important thing is to have fun! Don&rsquo;t try to overthink a dual cast with a friend: your main concern should be having an enjoyable time with your friend. The more casts you do together, the more comfortable you&rsquo;ll get!
